Sleep: How’s THAT work?
If you’re like me, when someone starts talking about sleep, you’re already thinking, “Yeah, yeah — we need more sleep. Fat chance.” Fair. But sleep isn’t mystical. In a fun, simple way, here’s what’s really going on when you drift off.

Did You Know… 🤔
- Nightly rinse cycle: While you sleep, fluid washes through your brain, clearing the waste your neurons built up during the day.
- Memory filing: Your brain replays the day and decides what to keep or toss — a mental filing system while you’re offline.
- Stress reset: Cortisol drops, heart rate steadies, and your mood gets a fresh start.
The 4 Stages (on repeat)
Sleep runs in cycles that repeat 4–6 times a night. Each cycle hits these stages:
🌀 N1 — Light sleep (~5%)
Drifting in and out; muscles relax; breathing slows. Systems begin to power down.
🌙 N2 — The stabilizer (~45%)
Most of the night. Body temp drops; brain waves slow; “sleep spindles” help lock in new memories and filter distractions.
💪 N3 — Deep sleep (~20–25%)
Heavy-duty repair. Growth hormone surges, tissue rebuilds, immune system recalibrates, energy stores refill.
💭 REM — Dream sleep (~20–25%)
Brain is buzzing; body is still. Emotions process, creativity fires, and learning cements.
Across the night: 🧠 brain debris clears • 💤 body repairs • ⚙️ hormones rebalance • 💡 focus and mood sharpen.
